Fear Itself

What if we all stopped caring about what everyone thinks? What if we just blurted out the truth? All of it. Our secrets, lies, hidden truths, peccadillos, what shames us, what hurts us. At the moment, we know truth can hurt. But if we all stopped caring what everyone/anyone thinks, it wouldn't hurt. "Who cares?" we'd chime and proceed to talk about lawn care products. Wouldn't that burst a few venom balloons! My wish, my most earnest deep-gut desire, is to speak (write) without worrying about how "Nails" is going to respond. "Nails" is skilled with venom balloons. When were were growing up, "Nails'" existence edited everything until we couldn't open our mouths or take a step out of the house without pausing to consider how "Nails" could construe it into . . . well, anything more would be amo for "Nails." One day. One day I'm going to write without fear of "Nails." And it's either going to be the day I say "Screw Nails!" or the day "Nails" isn't around any more. Thing is, it's not so much "Nails;" it's the people who care about "Nails'" influence. Simplest solution: let's all stop caring about what "Nails" thinks. Has "Nails" earned our care? Do we owe "Nails" something? Say it with me, people: "Free Screaminglady! SCREW NAILS!"

Honestly? I couldn't give two craps about Nails, or anyone else. You shouldn't either.

Now, there are a few things to consider here. One does want to decide how one wishes to be perceived. Do you want people to think you're polite? Do you want to be treated as a polite person? Then you should act polite. Not just online, but in all public interactions.

And of course, you should consider the limiter you want to put on public information. Cuz some stuff is no one's business. Especially the stuff even YOU don't like about yourself.

But changing what you say, stifling your opinions, or otherwise editing yourself because you're afraid of what someone else might think of who you are? That's a waste of time and energy.

I saw a man tell another man the other day -- in complete seriousness -- that if he wanted a particular job, he would have to have a facelift, Botox, blah blah blah. Because of what people would want him to be.

Sorry. People don't get to tell me what I should be. I get to be what I WANT to be. That's the fun of being a grown-up. If who you are at your core offends someone else, but it doesn't bother you, then...well...screw Nails. :-)

I am polite. I generally act polite in public (including on line), even though I act rather silly at times. I also like to play video games. For a 40-year-old woman, well, that is FROWNED UPON by some. I also like to eat cupcakes and bacon. Others frown on that. I also let my kid's hair grow long and wild. Oooh, some people, not big fans of that. I watch television, I don't wash my hair every day, and I often don't recycle paper. I don't have religion, and I refuse to run for office under any party designation.

And saying so is incredibly liberating.

Because you don't get a chance to do this life thing over again.

Screw Nails.

And just to be clear -- Nails wants ammo, right? Why do you let Nails hurt you? Nails' barbs go the way of the words of your liberated true self. Floating out into the ether, wafting away, no impact at all.
