Baby, won't you buy my car? (And other questions)

A very nice couple from San Rafael bought my Volvo yesterday. (I now drive the darling pictured at left.) Besides the required DMV forms, we discussed some mutual interests like garden pots, beer making, and writing. When the gentleman asked me the purpose of my blog, the thing that had been nagging at writing nerve most recently assaulted me like a chubby middle-schooler screaming "duh" into my face. (Not that the buyer was any of those things.) What is the purpose of this blog? It doesn't have one, really. It's a bit of a navel gazing exercise to narrate my writing life. But, who the hell cares about that. I'm off to find new purpose for this screaming lady. Stay tuned.

Hang in there and experiment. Much of life is about experiencing and learning. Such is the case in Blogland. If you plug yourself into Technorati and Feedburner, people will start to read the blog, people you've never even met. This can be a good thing and you can develop community. Or, long term, we will all tire of trying to figure out what purpose blogs hold for us.
Right now, I'm trying to figure out what types of items resonate with readers. It seems to be the more personal (or things that are widely shared personal things... writing etc.).

The other reason, of course, is so that people who like your brain, and have liked it for a long time, can get a little dose of you now and again. But really, as far as I'm concerned, there doesn't have to be a purpose. Writing, even if only for the sake of writing, is generally a good thing. It's all part of a well-balanced breakfast, really.

I have noticed that the entries that seem to spur the most discussion are those that either ask a question (showing our vulnerability), or that come to a controversial conclusion. Unfortunately, no one ever follows up to my posts about ponies or cookies.
